Why is Bondi Beach so popular with tourists?

You've seen the mid-summer pictures of Bondi Beach filled with sunbathers under the blazing blue sky.

With more than 25,000 beaches in Australia why is Bondi the most famous of them all?

There are a few reasons why this eclectic beachside suburb attracts thousands of visitors every day. From its world-class restaurants, proximity to the Sydney CBD, relatively safe swimming conditions, and 1km strip of white sandy beach Bondi has rightly earned its reputation as one of Australia's top beaches.

Bondi Beach Restaurants

The restaurants in Bondi are second to none. From relaxed beach side spots such as Bucket List to the spectacularly situated celebrity haunt Bondi Icebergs there are restaurants to suit every taste. Visit our Eat section to learn more.

Bondi Beach Surfing and Swimming

Bondi's kilometre stretch of sand and great surf combine to make this one of the most enjoyable beaches to visit in summer. Patrolled by the Bondi Lifeguards it is vital that you swim between the flags to ensure you are being watched at all times. And if you are not a strong swimmer do not wade into the water beyond waist height. Whilst Bondi is safer than most beaches it can still be very dangerous for those unfamiliar with ocean swimming. Visit our swimming guide for more information about swimming at Bondi.

Getting from the city to Bondi Beach

Bondi Beach is the simplest beach to get to from the Sydney city CBD. You can catch a bus directly from the CBD or, if it's a busy weekend with lots of traffic, it is quicker to catch a train to Bondi Junction before catching a short bus trip to the beach. See our transport guide for more.
