Everything you need to know about the Bondi Salties
If you’ve not heard of the Bondi Salties we’re certain you’ve seen them. This large community group of ocean swimming enthusiasts meet at 6.15am every Friday morning at the North Bondi ramp for a run followed by a swim across the bay. They always look like they’re having fun and ask anyone who has joined them and they will confirm that this is one of the best community groups in Sydney to be a part of - friendly, welcoming and supportive. We spoke to them to find out just what the Bondi Salties are all about.
How did it start?
One beautiful Friday morning in June 2013 a group of old friends led by Alister Dalzell decided to meet at the North Bondi Ramp for a quick soft sand, bay swim and coffee. Back on land, the post-swim smiles were large and the energy was electric…we were hooked and the Salties were born.
Who can join and how much does it cost?
We are a free community group and welcome all ocean swimming lovers. Important to note, however, that we do not provide any water safety during our swims. Every swimmer should be confident in navigating open water and able to swim 1km of continuous freestyle or more. A Bondi bay swim is 1.3kms.
What about tourists? Can they participate as a one off?
Of course! Once they’ve completed a swim they’ll be rewarded with the iconic yellow Salties swim cap courtesy of our partner Santa Vittoria. A bit of memorabilia to take home!
What makes the Salties different to other swimming clubs?
Consistency, the act of showing up every Friday - regardless of big or small swell, bad or good week, summer or winter. This consistency really embodies the group and the people.
Any particularly memorable moments over the years?
We turned 10 last year and hosted a birthday party at the North Bondi RSL for 200 Salt-loving humans. It was an awesome night and a great way to celebrate the milestone with old and new Salties. We also love a great dress-up/costume themed party…I mean who doesn’t!
How many dolphin encounters? Sharks?
Multiples of both. The dolphin encounters are special as you usually hear them before you see them; a truly magical experience. Sharks on the other hand usually pop up when you least expect; but are equally as magical. There are often small stingrays and fish hiding between the sand and waves, and these are fun to spot on your way out or into shore.
And we understand coffee plays a big role?
Coffee plays a HUGE role. The combination of the post swim high, caffeine and good company is very special. Being on a Friday folks also usually have more time to chat, sip coffee, and enjoy the morning salty glow.
